Comparison of Subsurface Drip Irrigation Uniformity Designs on Cotton Production

چکیده
One of the biggest obstacles to the widespread adoption of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) on the High Plains of Texas is the high cost of initial installation. In some cases, SDI costs can be reduced if systems are designed using lower irrigation uniformity standards. The question becomes “what is the cost in terms of cotton lint yield of lowering the uniformity standards for SDI design?” A SDI system was installed in a 16-acre area with drip lines located in alternate furrows on 30-inch rows. The field was divided into four blocks with six treatment areas per block. Within each block, two treatment areas were irrigated with each 0.630-in., 0.875-in., and 0.990-in. diameter drip tape laterals. These three lateral diameters were designed to provide flow variations (FV’s) of 0.71, 0.94, and 0.85 within the respective area. Each of the three drip designs within each block was used to irrigate cotton at two levels, 60% and 100% of a base irrigation amount. The experiment was conducted from 2001 through 2004. Total cotton lint yield within a zone was not affected by water distribution designs having FV’s between 0.71 and 0.94 during the test period. Conditions other than SDI design had bigger impacts on the spatial yield variability than the design treatments. Cotton yield response tended to follow the trends established by variations in emitter flow rate along the length of a drip tape lateral. Generally higher yields occurred at locations of higher drip emitter discharge, however, the magnitude of the yield change over the length of the lateral did not correspond the magnitude of the emitter flow rate change over the test period. Unusual conditions during the test period may have masked expected differences in SDI design, however, in some instances, SDI installation costs may be reduced by relaxing design specifications.

Economic Analysis of Subsurface Drip Irrigation System Uniformity
As more subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems are being installed throughout the plains of Texas for cotton production, irrigators are concerned about the high cost of installation and the potential benefits of alternative designs. A field study was conducted at the Texas AgriLife Research facilities at Halfway, Texas, to document the agronomic impacts of distribution uniformities on cotton ...
متن کاملResponse of lateral placement depths of subsurface drip irrigation on okra (Abelmoschus esculentus)
Subsurface drip irrigation is defined as application of water below the soil surface through emitters, with discharge rates generally in the same range as surface drip irrigation. It has many advantages over surface drip. To see the response of subsurface drip irrigation on okra yield, a study was conducted at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, India during 2003 and 2004. Okra (...
متن کاملComparison of Decision Rules for Subsurface Drip Irrigation Practices Using a Nonlinear
A comparison of decision rules has been made for case studies of corn production using subsurface drip irrigation under three agricultural management practices (no irrigation, uniform irrigation, and variable rate irrigation). The uniform irrigation strategy appeared to perform the best than the other two management practices under different risk scenarios.
متن کاملLint yield and seed quality response of drip irrigated cotton under various levels of water
Restricted water resources are a limiting factor for irrigation applications throughout the world. The effects of irrigation regimes (amount) on cotton lint yield are known, but there is little information on the effect of irrigation regimes on seed quality of cotton. In this study, the effects of deficit irrigation after the onset of flowering on lint yield and seed quality of cotton (Gossypiu...

Indiahas the largest area under onion (Allium cepa) crop but its average productivity (14.21 t ha-1) is considerably lower than the world’s average of 19.4 t ha-1. Besides low productivity, irrigation efficiencies are also very low i.e. 30-35% in India. Managing onion crop with less than adequate irrigation water availability is a challenge in several parts of the country. Options of i) deficit...
